Russia, China, and Iran are escalating online influence efforts ahead of US election, says Microsoft

A hot potato: Microsoft is warning that Russia, China, and Iran are carrying out online cyber and influence efforts ahead of the US election, and there are signs that these campaigns will escalate as November 5 draws closer. While Russia is smearing VP Kamala Harris, China is targeting Republicans critical of the country.

Microsoft Threat Analysis Center (MTAC) writes that malicious foreign influence operations aimed at the US election are evolving. Clint Watts, MTAC General Manager, notes that history has shown how foreign actors' ability to rapidly distribute deceptive content can significantly impact public perception and electoral outcomes. Therefore, voters, government institutions, candidates, and parties must remain vigilant against suspicious online activity in the two days before and after election day. MTAC says it is virtually certain that these actors will ramp up their operations during this time.

Iran, despite escalating tensions with Israel, is running multiple influence operations against varying targets in the US, especially the Trump campaign. It has called on Americans to boycott the elections due to the candidates' support for Israel, and has tried to incite anti-Israeli protests at universities.

Russia, no stranger to accusations of trying to influence US elections, is targeting the Harris-Walz campaign. Its agents continue to create deepfaked videos about the Vice President, one of which shows her making derogatory comments about Trump. Another accuses her of illegal poaching in Zambia, and another video spreads disinformation about Tim Walz. The Walz video gained more than 5 million views on X in the first 24 hours of it being posted.

China's operations have focused on down-ballot Republican candidates and members of Congress that advocate for anti-Chinese policies, such as Rep. Barry Moore, Sen. Marsha Blackburn, and Marco Rubio (who is not currently up for reelection). Chinese agents have used antisemitic messages, pushed accusations of corruption, and promoted opposition candidates.

The increasing use of generative AI in these disinformation campaigns is especially worrying, given how advanced the technology is becoming. MTAC warned in September 2023 that China was using AI to influence US voters with content that focused on politically divisive topics, including gun violence, and denigrated US political figures and symbols (below).

Six months later, MTAC issued a second warning about China's use of generative AI to sow disruption in the United States as the actors continued to refine AI-generated or AI-enhanced content, creating videos, memes, and audio.

So we have Russia trying to push pro Trump/anti Harris propaganda as usual, and now also China pushing propaganda against specific candidates it thinks pose issue for itself, and Iran pushing anti Israel propaganda.

What a fun time to be an American voter /s.

I'm sure this comments section is going to turn fully toxic pretty fast. I'm going to sit this one out, I'd advise the rest of you to do the same.

I guess nobody wants to talk about the influence of the Labor party sending both donations and support personnel to the Democrat party?

It's only "election interference" if the Bad Guys do it.
I didn't know "the labor party" were enemies of the United States actively looking to fracture NATO along with everything they stand for....let that sync in your brain for a bit.

the issue seems to be the malicious intent of the content itself. As in the fake car crash story involving a politician using a made up news station, the impersonator claiming to be a victim of another politician who looked nothing like the actual guy himself, and the fake bugatti, yacht, mansion type of stories just for beginners targeting specific groups as well. That's a bit beyond donations and support, and much more manipulative when it comes to social media

I suspect at least a few of them here are genuinely Russian interference accounts. They are everywhere.
They're almost entirely make believe. The two candidates' campaigns are spending like a billion dollars. The "foreign malign influence campaigns", according to the Bastions of Truth that are our politicians, and the DoJ, spent a couple million.

The foreign ones, like the article mentioned, consist of memes on Facebook and Twitter. I'm not sure how brain dead and stupid you would need to be to change all your political beliefs because of an Engrishy meme on Twitter, but it's about as stupid as you would need to be to believe it meaningfully affects the outcome of the elections.

"Mis/Dis/Malinformation" and "election interference" are just bogeymen being used to justify censorship of regular people on social media and deplatforming independent media outlets to maintain narrative control.

Russia massively and openly interfered with the referendum and elections in Moldova. Massive illegal vote buyouts. (kinda like elon si doing right now) They are definitely doing the same with the US elections.

Except that much more money than that is involved and you don't seem to realize this. If some random "influencers" get millions, what about the high profile people who actually have a big audience? (how much money did tucker carlson get?) It's not about "twitter posts", it's about a message being put on repeat on all social platforms/TV and brainwashing the general maga cultist. It's a known fact that when something is repeated very often, even if untrue, it becomes "true" in the minds of many just because of how much they've seen it. It's why so many trump supporters also support putin if you ask them. Psychology 101.

When elections are this close, even a few people can influence the results of an election. We are talking about 1-2% here and there.

Just enemies of the people...

Free the criminals? Check.
Free accommodation for unlimited Illegals? Check.
Free Taylor Swift tickets for the Prime minister and his cronies? Check.
Free speech? Nope, sorry, not that one.

What do the tax payers get? Oh yes, broken election pledges in the form of higher taxes and jail sentences for anyone making mean tweets.
Never mind, at least we can soon all have some time off work thanks to new employment and strike threshold laws...(No, it doesn't help the working class, it just means more businesses will close and more will go without, as the country grinds to a standstill. Typical Labour government, really.)

I didn't know "free" Taylor Swift tickets could compare to the consequences of what Russia, China, Iran and a North Korea could do to the world if left unchecked.....of course assuming you are not a radical individual from any of those countries.....mmmmm......🤔

From my understanding Russia is seriously pushing for Trump
PRC mainly just wants to cause Havoc, ie no real preference as Dems continued specific tariffs and increased them. Trump threatens more , but that will be handled same way with grift and corruption . Eg all the money Ivanka made in PRC
Trump though detested from within his party, everyone things they can use him as easy to manipulate with flattery Loomer style
I mean Egypt cruel leaders got billions of dollars unfrozen by trump immediately with just a simple $10 million dollar secret payment in cash. Trump and his lackeys closed down investigations AKA Brett Cavanaugh style
Trump has had at least 7 phone calls out of office with Putin , running his shadow govt in waiting

All the GOP expert Russia experts in hearings have nearly all been charged with crimes

It the USA wasn't so powerful and had such an influence on the world, I would say you get what you deserve
Covid is fake
Climate change is fake
9/11 and Sandy Hook is fake
More than 2 weeks holiday a year is Communism
Books are bad , Guns are good
Free health care is evil

Rats is a dark maze of tunnels running around endlessly , prodded by propaganda , the fear machine, the hate, anger triggers to their deaths

Keep believing the fear/propaganda , that you are the freest country in the world, where a teacher with an AR15 is the answer
You are not wage slaves , and consumers to be exploited , turned on each other ,the horrors of men with eye liner , you are the greatest country on earth

A simple lesson Old school Foreign Policy is based on Domination -both Economic and Political , The USA it's self has overseen the death and poverty itself with it's own foreign policies . Enjoy the payback with Russian and PRC rejoicing that you hate each other
Fox Propaganda I think does it mainly just for profit , hate fear drives revenue.
Aussie Murdock knows how to exploit you, so F N easy
South African Musk hope Trump wins so he gets carte blanche to run his business as he see fits

Your cult flag you swear allegiance to at school is a ***** to be bought and sold to the highest bidder , the most powerful

Really USA citizens get what they deserve , no other western country is so gullible and easy to manipulate . UK got brexit , hilariously the whing now , oh I thought it would hurt others not me , I can't export to EU as red tape too high , still lots of refugees, no cheaper health care, can't retire to Spain as they think I'm an outsider how can I be that , I'm british

Well, we haven't had a "world war" since 1945...guess it's time to blow up the whole thing and start all over again, if THAT is possible!

Uh huh, fact remains that it is always a certain group of US politicians who are unashamedly open and naked in stating that they want to control online flow of informations. Here you are, Micro$oft, (and probably techspot too?) trying to deflect that on others.

And on foreign political interference, it's okay as long as they came from UK and Israel right? Must be, since I never hear Techspot post anything about those things.

As a Brit, I don't really have a dog in the fight. But generally-speaking, let's be honest with ourselves -ALL politicians, of any leaning, are just a bunch of self-serving tossers. Going back well over 2 thousand years to ancient Greece and Themistocles.........when the manipulation of people by smooth-talkers (ooops.. I mean 'democracy' ) first started.

The fact that China, Russia, Iran and North Korea are all influencing the elections in favor to Trump it further proves Harris is the better choice if we want to stop any further unrest in the world.
Pop quiz who owns MSNBC? I guess we should also just ignore that Harris is part of the the current administration that the unrest is cluster fudging under now.
So China wants Trump to win so he can raise Tarrifs? 🤔
Iran wants Trump to win so he can sanction them to a crawl like last time? 🤔
Putin wants Trump to win so that he has a greater unpredictable adversary to deal with? 🤔

If Trump is going to make make America compete with energy against Russia and Iran this is why they are against him. If China is against higher tarrifs this is why they are against Trump.

Also last month Microsoft said that Iran was targeting the Trump campaign servers allegedly.

This is the same Microsoft that was begging for a government contract to the the world's watch dog for the whole internet.
The source is biased and has a conflict of interest 🫳🎤!

First, your understanding needs to go beyond what FOX News and Right-Wing outlets tells you...for starters a Vice-President in the USA has almost no power other than being the tie-breaking vote in the Senate, aside from that a Vice-President would be rebelling against what the president mandates such it was the case with Mike Pence rebelling against Trump in approving Joe Biden's Presidency.....

Harris has handled those comments well enough for respect to President Biden because good or bad ALL the decisions she made in the last 4 years were under his command....You know the saying "there can only be one Captain in the ship."

So next time you hear those comments, you are now a bit more informed of the real truth.

About the Republican Campaign being Cyber "attacked"....let's think for a second, out of the two parties which one is the most likely to get cyber attacked by those countries?....The Democrats, correct?...and who do you think has more potential damaging information about the Democrats?...The Republican Campaign....So it's only obvious that these hackers tried to get strategic information from both parties through the Republicans to ultimately hurt Kamela Harris campaign.....

Or do you really think Iran, Russia, or China would ever want to hurt the chances of the only USA president in history that sees them as "friends".

It doesn't take a scientist to see through the smoke and mirrors...it only takes common sense....

Let's face it, if the general population use social media and are thick enough to believe everything it says, then use this for the basis of how they vote, then they will get their just deserts, and there will be no point crying over it,
